My first week with the Moto Droid
From Dumb phone to super phone
Most of the reviews I’ve read compared the Moto Droid with the iPhone, Blackberry or another Android phone. Before I walked out of Verizon with the Moto Droid early last Friday morning, I had walked in with an LG Chocolate. Making my experience a lot different from others who have previously used other smart phones.
I’ve briefly used Blackberries, iPhones and Androids (such as the hero), and I am pretty quick to pick up on new technology – but those first 3 days of owning the Droid were pretty frustrating. I have to first tell you that I had been reading leaks and rumors about Verizon getting the droid for months before it had come out. I love almost everything Google produces, and I’m very happy with my Verizon service – so having Android come to Verizon was a dream come true. Those reviews didn’t cover some of the simple things that a regular phone user might have trouble picking up on when switching to a smart phone.
Day One:
*At the Verizon store, the Verizon employee and myself struggled to figure out how to Capitalize a letter for my Gmail password.
*I managed to delete the Google search bar and didn’t know how to get it back
*Confused Messaging: is this a text message or instant message or gchat message
*Got lost with the GPS: killed the battery
Day Two:
*Downloaded Music Apps: killed the battery
*Got a text message with a ring tone, couldn’t figure out how to use it as a ringtone
*Realized some friends were in my contacts multiple times, if their names didn’t match up (1 entry from Facebook, 1 entry from Gmail and 1 entry from my old cell contacts)
Day Three:
*Couldn’t figure out how to stop programs from running
*Frustrated by zoom feature, the double tap only works with zombies
*Started to download apps, some crashed right away
*Blinded my family with the camera’s flash
Day Four:
*Finally started figuring things out
-Mastered and fell in LOVE with the hardware keyboard
-Found the Google search bar, and liked it better on the left side screen
-Downloaded a better Text Messaging app
-Downloaded Advance Task Killer
-Found amazing apps that work!
Day Five through Seven:
All of the frustrations from the first few days were easy to get past. It was a smart-phone adjustment period. Realized that this phone can do pretty much ANYTHING I want it to, as long as I set it up to do it. Well, almost anything, as my parents pointed out it can’t do the laundry or mow the lawn. – but it can find the best pricing for both! The camera is not so good, but I already have a great digital camera.
It turns out that I love the phone even more than I expected to. It amazes me how must customization there is with it. Everyone’s Droid is going to look and act so different! I love that!
I still need to reorganize my contacts, and I still have no idea how to get a ringtone out of my texts and in use as a ring tone.
